Julia Child was 50 when her first show, The French Chef, debuted on TV. She had moved to France fifteen years earlier, and had been deeply inspired by the magic of French Cuisine. It was a period of her life of which she said, “I felt myself opening like a flower.”
After a new highway forced him to close his restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, “Colonel” Harland Sanders created the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise – now known as KFC — at the age of 65, with little more than $105 from his social security check and his secret – some might say magical – recipe of herbs and spices.
Although it was her childhood dream, Kathryn Joosten didn’t begin to pursue her magic as an actress until she was 42. Spurred into action by both a painful divorce and her mother’s bitter deathbed regrets about failing to pursue her own dreams, Kathryn made her way to Hollywood at age 56. Best known for her roles in The West Wing and Desperate Housewives, Joosten won two Emmy Awards for her work.
What About You?
Life changes. We develop new dreams born out of seeing new possibilities, or we rediscover old dreams that ignite the same passion in us that they did when we were younger. A chapter of our life closes, and we are drawn to write a new story altogether. Maybe we come to it purposefully, as part of a carefully thought-out plan. Maybe it is thrust on us unwillingly. Perhaps it comes to us in a delightful surprise of unexpected recognition. A marriage ends, children leave home, we lose a job, or make another transition in our life, and suddenly there is a necessity – or simply an opportunity! — to create something new, to find and give birth to the magic in our hearts.
Do you see your own story in any of these possibilities?
Do you find yourself asking any of the following questions?
- Am I living the life I was meant to live?
- Am I fulfilling my life’s purpose?
- Is there more to life than what I am experiencing now?
Do you ever feel there could be more to life, but:
- You’re not sure what it is? or
- You don’t know how to find it? or
- You know – all too well! – what it is, but need help creating and implementing a plan to make it a reality?
